Inside the rotunda of the old St. Louis Hotel in New Orleans, an auction block stands in this view, with the words "M. Barnett / Office" lettered on the wall nearby. The hotel, completed in the late 1830s, was one of the city's grand public buildings, and before the Civil War its rotunda was used for slave auctions, part of New Orleans's large domestic slave trade. Made on a glass negative between 1900 and 1910 by the Detroit Publishing Company, the photograph shows the room decades after those sales had ended, when the hotel was a working commercial building.
