The view runs down Chartres Street toward St. Louis Cathedral, the church that anchors Jackson Square in New Orleans's French Quarter. The building was erected after a fire in 1788 and became one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. Arnold Genthe, a German-born photographer known for his street scenes in San Francisco and elsewhere, turned his camera to New Orleans, and the caption's note about wagons suggests horse-drawn traffic still shared the street. The record gives no date, so the period is best read from the scene itself.
