Looking down from above the grounds, this stereograph shows the Louisiana Purchase Monument and the Place of Varied Industries at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. The fair, held in 1904, marked the centennial of the 1803 purchase of French territory that roughly doubled the size of the United States, and its grounds were filled with monumental exhibition buildings laid out for crowds and public display. The card is dated around 1906, after the fair had closed, and it was published by the Standard Scenic Company, a firm that sold views of exhibitions and cities to a wide audience.
