Looking northeast, this view shows the west and center arches of the St. Louis Bridge partway through erection, with the steel spans reaching out from their piers over the Mississippi. Engineer James B. Eads designed the bridge, the first to cross the river at St. Louis, which opened in 1874. Its arches were built outward from the piers in cantilever fashion, without falsework propping them from below. This plate was reproduced from a photoprint in C.M. Woodward's 1881 history of the bridge, where it documents a method that drew wide attention from engineers.
