A riverfront view looking toward the Eads Bridge sets this stereograph apart from the many images of the bridge alone. The Eads Bridge opened in 1874 as the first bridge across the Mississippi at St. Louis, and its steel arches were a landmark of engineering that James B. Eads pushed through despite doubts about the project. By the late 1890s the levee was still a busy working waterfront of steamboats, freight and warehouses, and a stereo pair like this one let viewers at home see that activity in three dimensions.
