Few American bridges of the 1870s drew as much public attention as the Eads Bridge, which spans the Mississippi at St. Louis and is the subject of this hand-colored lithograph. Designed by engineer James B. Eads and completed in 1874, it was the first major bridge across the river at that point, and its steel arches and deep foundations sunk with pneumatic caissons were considered daring at the time. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued popular prints of American subjects, shows the structure with river traffic moving beneath it, a reminder of how central steamboat commerce was to the city. The printed text along the sheet gives the bridge's dimensions and cost, details that make the image useful for understanding how the project was presented to the public.
