The Eads Bridge, named for engineer James B. Eads, carries traffic over the Mississippi at St. Louis. Completed in 1874, it was the first bridge to cross the river at the city and was notable for its steel tubular arches, an unusual choice for a structure of that size. This stereograph, issued by the Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, around 1919, pairs the span with the riverfront levees, a reminder of how central the waterfront was to the city's commerce.
