Tall enough to dominate the skyline, the great Ferris wheel was one of the marquee attractions of the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, the world's fair that drew millions of visitors to the city that year. Stereograph cards like this one were made to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the wheel and the crowds below a sense of depth and three-dimensional presence. Carried home by fairgoers and sold in souvenir sets, such cards turned the exposition's spectacle into a keepsake of the fair's grand scale and its modern machinery.
