Electric light is the real subject of this stereograph, which shows the West Cascade at night, its illuminated water falling toward the Grand Basin, with the Palace of Education visible beyond. The Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904 marked the centennial of the 1803 land deal that doubled the nation's size, and its grounds were famous for their evening illumination, which earned the fair the nickname "Jewel City." Stereo cards like this one were sold to a broad public, and the 1905 date places the view just after the fair closed, when such images still circulated as souvenirs of the event.
