Looking down rather than across, this stereograph turns the commercial district of St. Louis into a patchwork of streets, rooftops and riverfront. By the 1860s St. Louis was one of the busiest river ports in the country, and its warehouses and trading houses made it a natural subject for a view of business at work. The card bears the blind stamp of Hoelke & Benecke, a St. Louis firm, and its date range places it in the Civil War years. Stereographs were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the streets and buildings a sense of depth that a flat print could not.
