Drawn as a bird's-eye view, this color lithograph shows the St. Louis waterfront with steamboats lined up along the Mississippi. A. Janicke & Co. made the lithograph, and Hagen & Pfau published it around 1859 through the Anzeiger des Westens, a German-language newspaper in the city. St. Louis was one of the busiest river ports in the country at that time, and its large German community made the paper a natural outlet for such views. The printed text accompanying the image adds explanatory detail to the scene.
