Here the Cape Cod Canal meets open water at its eastern mouth, where the cut across the base of the Cape spares ships the long and hazardous voyage around its outer shore. The canal opened in 1914 and was later taken over by the federal government, and it has carried heavy commercial and recreational traffic ever since. The caption card gives no date, and its location tracings are unverified, so the picture's exact year is uncertain. It still shows the engineered shoreline that changed coastal travel in southeastern Massachusetts.
