The title points to the canal's central idea: a channel where the waters of two bays meet. The Cape Cod Canal, cut across the narrow neck of land at the Cape's base, links Cape Cod Bay on the north with Buzzards Bay on the south, sparing coastal ships the long, hazardous voyage around the Cape's tip. It opened to traffic in 1914 and passed to federal control in 1928. The Bain News Service, a New York news-photo agency active in the early twentieth century, sold pictures like this one to newspapers that wanted images of new engineering works.
