The title names the 1,200-ton railroad bridge over the Cape Cod Canal at Buzzard's Bay, a span where the rail line crossed the waterway near the canal's western entrance. The canal was cut across the base of Cape Cod to spare coastal ships the long, hazardous trip around the peninsula, and it opened to traffic in 1914. The Bain News Service, a New York press photo agency, made this glass negative, but the record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified notes, so the exact year and the bridge's weight remain uncertain. The image still shows an early engineering project that reshaped travel along the New England coast.
