Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1889 was a harbor town that lived off its shore, its rope works, and its past. The Plymouth Cordage Company, whose long brick mill buildings stood near the waterfront, was among the largest employers in the region, drawing workers and shaping the town's streets and neighborhoods. Rail service on the Old Colony line linked the town to Boston and Cape Cod, bringing summer visitors who came to see Plymouth Rock and the early colonial sites that residents took pride in. Local life centered on civic institutions and holiday observances, most notably the Forefathers' Day gatherings each December, which honored the Pilgrims who landed in 1620. Townspeople in this period would have known Plymouth as both a working manufacturing place and the traditional birthplace of New England settlement.
