Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1889 was a town with two identities: the 1620 landing site of the Pilgrims and a working community on Plymouth Harbor. The Plymouth Cordage Company, which made rope and twine in large waterfront plants, was the dominant employer and drew workers from surrounding villages and from immigrant families. The Old Colony Railroad linked the town to Boston, carrying freight and summer visitors who came to see Plymouth Rock and the old houses on the hill. Residents would have known the town as the place where the Pilgrims came ashore, and also as a cordage town whose fortunes rose and fell with shipping and orders for rope.
