Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1889 was a working harbor town that also drew visitors for its founding history. The Plymouth Cordage Company, which made rope in works near the waterfront, was one of the town's largest employers and gave the harbor much of its industrial character. The Old Colony Railroad, which had reached Plymouth in the 1840s, carried summer travelers and day-trippers to a place residents knew first as the site of the Pilgrims' 1620 landing. Plymouth Rock, Pilgrim Hall, and the yearly Forefathers' Day observance in December were the town's proudest attractions, and local leaders kept them at the center of civic life. Viewed from above, the town shows both a productive port and a shrine to its origins.
