**Massachusetts around 1900** was one of the most heavily industrialized states in the country, with textile mills along the Merrimack and Blackstone rivers and shoe factories in Lynn and Brockton that drew many immigrant workers. Cape Cod, the sandy peninsula reaching into the Atlantic south of Boston, depended on different work: cod and mackerel fishing from Provincetown, salt making, and cranberry bogs spreading through towns such as Harwich and Carver. Rail service brought the Cape closer to the mainland, reaching Sandwich in 1848 and Provincetown by 1873. By the turn of the century, hotels and boarding houses in Hyannis and Falmouth were welcoming summer visitors from Boston and Providence, so seafaring families and vacationers shared the same roads.
