Cape Cod in the late nineteenth century was a place of fishermen, farmers, and sea captains, though the great whaling fleets that once sailed from its harbors had largely disappeared by then. Cranberry bogs spread across the low, sandy ground between the towns, and the berries moved by rail and coastal steamer to markets in Boston and New York. Railroads that reached the Cape in the 1840s and 1870s made it easier for summer visitors to arrive, and hotels and cottages began to rise in the shore villages. Life in the towns still turned on the harbor, the church, and the town meeting, and winter storms regularly drove ships onto the outer beaches.
