Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in the later nineteenth century was a region of fishing ports, salt works, cranberry bogs, and farms set among sandy pine woods. Fishing, coastal schooner trade, and cranberry growing supported most households, while the whaling trade that had once made Cape ports rich had largely faded by the 1870s. Railroad lines reached the peninsula in the 1840s and 1850s and extended farther in the 1870s, bringing mail, freight, and the first summer visitors who would later reshape towns such as Falmouth and Hyannis. Residents knew the Cape as a place of seafaring families, town meetings, and treacherous waters off the outer shoals where storms could wreck a vessel within hours.
