This bird's-eye view covers a town on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in the decades around 1900, when the peninsula was changing fast. Cod fishing and coastal schooner trade still gave many harbor towns their rhythm, but the railroads that reached the Cape in the 1850s and 1870s had opened it to summer visitors and made Provincetown and Hyannis easier to reach. Cranberry bogs, salt works, and small-scale shipbuilding supplied local incomes, while the shoreline's shifting sandbars kept mariners wary. Residents would have known the Cape for its sea captains, its fishing fleets, and the steady arrival of boarding-house guests each summer. The Cape Cod Canal, opened in 1914, would soon shorten the sea route around the peninsula.
