This bird's-eye view is filed under Cape Cod, though its title gives no clear town name, so the picture is best read against the peninsula as a whole in the late 1800s. Railroads reached the Cape in the 1850s and made it easier to ship cranberries, salt fish, and cordwood to Boston and beyond. Cranberry bogs spread across the low ground between the towns, while coastal villages depended on fishing, coasting trade, and small shipyards. Many residents had grown up with whaling's decline, and they measured change by new rail lines, church bells, and the seasonal summer visitors who began arriving in greater numbers.
