Provincetown, at the tip of Cape Cod, was a working fishing port around the turn of the twentieth century, when its harbor held mackerel schooners and cod boats and its waterfront fed a fleet that sold fish to markets up and down the coast. The railroad reached the town in 1873, bringing summer visitors and freight that supplemented the fishing economy. Portuguese immigrants had become a large part of the fishing workforce by then, and the town's streets and wharves reflected that mix of Yankee, Cape Verdean, and Portuguese families. Artists began arriving in the 1890s, drawn by the light and low rents, and by the 1910s the town was known as much for its painters as for its fleet. The Pilgrim Monument, completed in 1910, stood as a reminder that the Mayflower passengers had first come ashore here in 1620.
