This view of Main Street in Harwich Port, on the south side of Cape Cod, is distinctive for the theater it shows along the village street. The photograph is undated, but the catalog places it between 1910 and 1940, a period when the Cape was becoming a popular summer destination for visitors arriving by rail and, later, by automobile. Summer amusements like local theaters and playhouses were part of that shift, and a street scene like this one records how a small fishing and shipping village was adapting to seasonal tourism.
