Paterson, New Jersey, was known as Silk City for its textile mills, and this 1920 ink drawing records a theater at the corner of Main and Smith streets there. The Majestic belongs to the boom in motion picture houses that filled American downtowns during the 1910s and 1920s, when silent films drew large crowds and owners built ever larger auditoriums. Architectural drawings like this one show how such buildings were laid out before construction began, and they often preserve the appearance of theaters that have since been altered or lost.
