The Fabian Regent theater stood on Union Street near Market Street in Paterson, New Jersey, and this ink drawing records its design from 1926, when movie houses were growing from modest storefront venues into large civic buildings. Architectural drawings of this kind, held in the Library of Congress's Architecture, Design and Engineering collection, served as working documents for builders and show how the architects intended the building to look and function. Paterson's theater boom in the 1920s, which this drawing reflects, shows how the motion picture changed the design of American downtowns.
