Drawn in ink in 1919, this architectural drawing records the Orpheum theater on Van Houten Street near Main Street in Paterson, New Jersey, as its designers planned it. Paterson was a major silk-manufacturing city, and during the 1910s its downtown theaters were showing motion pictures alongside vaudeville. Held by the Library of Congress in its Architecture, Engineering and Design collection, the drawing shows how the building was laid out before construction, a useful record of the decade when movies became mass entertainment.
