Drawn from the Dorchester Neck peninsula south of town, this etching shows Boston across the water as it looked in the first months of the war. Its date line, September 16, 1775, places it just after the battles of Lexington and Concord and Bunker Hill, when British troops were penned into the town by American forces on the surrounding land. The print was issued in London under Joseph F. W. DesBarres, a British surveyor whose charts and views were gathered in *The Atlantic Neptune*, a multivolume atlas for the Royal Navy. Its value lies in that purpose: the views were made to inform officers about coastlines and harbors, so they record the shoreline and town with a surveyor's precision.
