Genthe, a German-born photographer who settled in New York and was best known for his portraits of writers, performers, and society figures, made this print, and the caption card identifies the sitter only as Mrs. Alan Bott. The card carries no date, and the record itself notes that its data is unverified, so the sitter's life and the sitting's timing remain uncertain. Genthe's studio work from the early twentieth century was known for soft lighting and an informal, unposed feel, which makes his portraits valuable to researchers studying how the era's notable people presented themselves.
