Loretta Velasquez was a Cuban-born woman who said she served in the Confederate army in the Civil War by disguising herself as a man. She later claimed to have worked as a spy, and she told that story in her 1876 memoir, *The Woman in Battle*. The caption card's tags, "Women" and "Spies," point to the attention her account drew, though historians have questioned parts of it. The record gives no date for this drawing or its reproduction, so the exact origin of the image remains uncertain.
