Two women sit together at a desk in this full-length portrait: Helen Hamilton Gardener, a writer and reformer born in 1853, and Alice Paul, a much younger suffragist born in 1885. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news pictures taken in Washington, D.C., in the years before the First World War. Gardener had a long career as a novelist and lecturer and was appointed to the U.S. Civil Service Commission, while Paul was rising as an organizer for women's suffrage. Their shared pose hints at the working alliances across generations that drove the campaign for the vote.
