Depew, New York, took shape in 1898 as a railroad village on the eastern edge of Buffalo in Erie County. It was named for Chauncey M. Depew, the longtime attorney and later president of the New York Central Railroad, and the company's rail yards and repair shops gave the community its reason to exist. Most residents worked for the railroad or in the trades that supported it, and their jobs tied their fortunes to freight volume and the company's investment in the yards. Buffalo, a few miles west, was then one of the largest grain, lumber, and manufacturing centers in the state, and Depew drew part of its workforce from that larger city's growing economy. Local life centered on the shops, the rail line, and the small civic institutions that a young incorporated village was still building.
