The lounge, or *Gesellschaftszimmer*, of the express steamer *Kaiser Wilhelm II* is the focus here, a room meant to show passengers the comfort and polish of Norddeutscher Lloyd's flagship. The liner entered service on the North Atlantic run between Bremen and New York in 1903, and the Germans built her to compete for speed and luxury with rival British and American lines. This photochrom print was made by the Detroit Photographic Company from a Photoglob Zürich original, a color process that produced vivid, hand-registered tones and was popular for travel views of the early twentieth century. Its interior subject makes it less common than the exterior views of ships on the water.
