Inside the ladies' salon of the Norddeutscher Lloyd steamer *Kaiserin Maria Theresia*, the Bremen line's ship carried mail under an imperial postal contract, which is why it bore the "Reichspostdampfer" label. Norddeutscher Lloyd ran some of the largest passenger ships on the North Atlantic around 1900, and its women's lounges were built as calmer spaces for travelers. This view is a photochrom, a color process developed by Photoglob in Zürich, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold such prints in the United States. The saturated colors bring out the upholstery, paneling, and fittings of Edwardian shipboard interiors.
