A formal dining saloon aboard the Norddeutscher Lloyd steamer *Kaiserin Maria Theresia* gives this view its particular focus, showing a room that German liners of the period used to impress passengers. The line, based in Bremen, ran ships to New York and other ports, and its large public rooms were meant to rival the grand hotels of the day. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed by Photoglob in Zürich that built its image from several printed layers, and the Detroit Publishing Company distributed such views in the United States. Dating to about 1905 to 1910, it captures the shipboard luxury of that era's ocean travel.
