The stairway and forecourt in this view belong to the Norddeutscher Lloyd steamer *Kaiserin Maria Theresia*, a ship of the Bremen-based line. Norddeutscher Lloyd carried mail under contract to the German Imperial Post, so its vessels bore the title Reichspostdampfer, or imperial mail steamer. This is a photochrom print, made by the Photoglob company in Zürich, which built each image from several colored lithographic stones laid over a photographic base. The record dates it to about 1905 to 1910, when German liners were prized as showcases of engineering and national prestige.
