Overnight crossings are the particular focus of this poster, which promotes Southern Railway sailings linking Southampton with Le Havre and Newhaven with Dieppe. The service let travelers leave London in the evening and arrive on the Continent by morning, a time saving that the railway's advertising stressed. Kenneth D. Shoesmith, a marine artist who produced many posters for the company, made the design, and Sanders Phillips & Co. printed it in the years between the wars. The poster shows how Southern Railway tied rail and steamship travel into a single journey.
