Stieglitz made this picture from the upper deck of an ocean liner, looking down at the third-class passengers below, a view that sets it apart from the other ship scenes on this board. Its geometry of slanting decks, railings, and crowded figures reads almost like an abstraction, and it marks a turn in his work away from soft pictorial effects toward the sharper, flatter forms that later defined modernist photography. The subject, immigrants crossing the Atlantic in steerage during the 1900s, reflects the years when millions of people arrived in the United States by sea, many of them traveling in the cramped lower decks.
