Rather than a deck or a port scene, this picture turns the camera inside a steamboat to show its dining saloon at mealtime, with tables laid for service. Photographs of this kind from around 1900 are valuable because they record the interior life of river and coastal steamers, which carried passengers and freight across American waterways before rail and highway travel overtook them. The silver printing-out process used here produced a soft, warm-toned image that was common in that period. The print was later reproduced in Eyes of the Nation, a Library of Congress-based survey of American visual history, where it stands as a glimpse of how travelers were fed and housed on the water.
