From the porch of the Morgan house, this 1886-era albumen print shows a steamboat nosing toward the landing at Silver Springs, Florida, where the clear spring-fed water drew tourists from the Northern states in the late 1800s. Steamers ran up the Ocklawaha River to bring visitors to the springs, so the arrival of a boat was a central event of a stay there. The photograph was made by George Barker, a Niagara Falls studio photographer who sold views of popular resorts and scenic places. Its albumen print process, which used egg-white-coated paper, was the standard for commercial photographs of this period.
