A view of the interior rather than the deck or hull, this photochrom shows a Luxuszimmer, or luxury stateroom, aboard the Norddeutscher Lloyd steamer König Albert. The ship was one of the German Reichspostdampfer, or imperial mail steamers, which carried government mail alongside passengers for the Bremen-based line. Photoglob Zürich made the print with photochrom, a Swiss process that layered several lithographic stones to produce strong color, and the Detroit Publishing Company later distributed it in the United States. The room's ornate furnishings reflect the Edwardian-era comfort that wealthy passengers expected on transatlantic crossings.
