Built by the Union Iron Works in San Francisco and named for the city, the cruiser *U.S.S. San Francisco* was a point of civic pride when it entered service in 1890. Its launch and commissioning tied the city's shipyards to the growing American steel navy of the late nineteenth century. This glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American cities, landscapes and ships. Its date is an estimate, placed between 1890 and 1901 from the company's own records.
