The photograph shows Commodore Fife coming aboard the U.S.S. *San Francisco*, with the ship's officers and seamen lined up to receive him. The cruiser, a steel protected ship commissioned in 1890, belonged to a navy then being rebuilt after decades of neglect, and formal salutes and ranked crews were the everyday courtesy of naval life. The Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely recording ships, cities and scenes for sale to the public, made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative. Its date is estimated from a company catalog of 1901.
