The ship in this view is the U.S.S. *San Francisco*, a steel protected cruiser named for the city and built as part of the navy's post-1880s modernization, when the United States moved away from wooden and iron-clad vessels. Her name ties the photograph to San Francisco, a port that depended on naval protection of the Pacific coast and on the warships that called there. The picture survives as a glass-plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American cities, landscapes and ships in the years around 1900. Its record notes that the date is an estimate, drawn from the company's 1901 catalog, so the photograph is best read as a record of a ship in its early service.
