The scene shows Commodore Fife leaving the U.S.S. San Francisco, with a saluting party marking his departure from the steel cruiser, which the Navy commissioned in 1890. Such farewells were formal rituals of naval life, when officers and crew turned out to honor a senior man as he went over the side. The Detroit Publishing Company made the picture, and its photographers documented American places and people widely around the turn of the century. This glass negative has a visible break that was repaired with tape to a second sheet of glass, a reminder of how fragile these plates were.
