The lead subject here is the crew of the protected cruiser USS *San Francisco*, posed together as a ship's company rather than a single officer or sailor. The cruiser was commissioned in 1890 and spent much of the following decade in Pacific waters, a period when the Navy was expanding and its new steel ships were a source of national pride. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch glass plate negative, sold views of American places and ships to a wide market, so this group portrait offers a record of the men who served aboard during the years just before the Spanish-American War.
