Lincoln appears here in a color chromolithograph that pairs his portrait with the Emancipation Proclamation, the wartime order he signed in 1863 declaring enslaved people in Confederate-held territory free. The print was issued in Cincinnati by the Strobridge Lithographing Company around 1888, a city with a strong commercial printing trade in the late nineteenth century. Its copyright notice names Mrs. M. M. Pabor, which suggests a private publisher or artist taking advantage of the era's popular market for patriotic images of Lincoln, many of which were sold to homes and schools long after his death in 1865.
