Few color prints from the 1870s document a farmers' organization as directly as this chromolithograph, which takes the National Grange, the fraternal order of farmers formally known as the Patrons of Husbandry, as its subject. J. Hale Powers & Co. of Cincinnati issued it around 1873, and the Strobridge & Co. lithographic house in the same city printed it. Such prints reflect the boom in commercial chromolithography that put colorful images within reach of ordinary households. The Grange, founded in 1867, expanded quickly in the early 1870s, and the print offers a glimpse of how the group wanted rural life to be seen. It was later reproduced in *Eyes of the Nation*, a visual history of the United States.
