Bison hunting is the subject that sets this label apart from the many tobacco wrappers of the period, which usually leaned on portraits, sporting scenes, or bright decorative borders. Spence Brothers and Co. of Cincinnati used the color lithograph to sell its chewing tobacco on store shelves, and the Strobridge & Co. firm, also in Cincinnati, was one of the busiest lithographic printers in the country in the 1870s. Scenes of the plains hunt were popular in these years, just as the great bison herds were being decimated. The title "Rivals" suggests a contest or rivalry, a common theme for advertising meant to appeal to men.
