Gift for the Grangers" was printed in Cincinnati around 1873 as a chromolithograph, a multicolor print made from stone plates. Its title speaks to members of the National Grange, the farmers' fraternal order founded in 1867 that grew quickly across the country during the 1870s. Strobridge & Co., a Cincinnati lithography firm, produced the color printing, and J. Hale Powers & Co. published it as a fraternity keepsake and decorative art piece. The Grange was organizing rural families and pressing for agricultural reforms at the time, which gave prints like this a place in farm homes and lodge halls. The print was later reproduced in *Eyes of the Nation* (1997), a survey of American visual history.
